Welcome to this week’s State of the Game where we’ll be covering the week from the 20th to the 26th of March. The bulk of the top level stats are up this week with the average players almost triple that of last week. Those players were also spending longer in game, spending about 75% more time in game on average. Additionally, the unplayed stat dropped about 20% which shows more people are interested in playing this week’s games now, rather than shelving them for later.
PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds takes the top spot this week by a wide margin. Considering the game’s pedigree this probably isn’t much of a surprise to fans of the genre. For the uninitiated, Brendan Greene, Bluehole Inc’s lead designer on the game, is responsible for the widely popular mod, then official game H1Z1: King of the Hill. Battlegrounds hasn’t quite surpassed its predecessor yet, averaging about 20% fewer players active players overall. It is growing though so it’s likely a matter of time before Battlegrounds takes the crown away from the king.
This week sees two separate titles make their way into the top 5 trending through the use of Steam key giveaways. Whilst many developers use this to build or rebuild, an audience the effect is typically quite short lived. Indeed for both of these titles whilst they did receive a significant boost that was all but gone a couple days later. For the most part, it appears to be Steam Card hunters who are likely to flock to these kinds of games, rather than players who are actually interested in the game itself. Comparatively, for the games with sales that manage to make this chart, the swell lasts for a week or two afterwards.
