Welcome to State of the Game, a weekly look back at the games that were released on Steam and how they did, statistically speaking. Today we'll be taking a look at games released between the 15th and 21st of January, of which there were about 158 or so released. The number of people playing new releases has steadily increased over the past couple weeks which is typical for this time of year. We're starting to approach the time when big titles will start releasing on Steam so I'd be expecting to see a few hits in the not too distant future. For now, let's take a look at this week's top games.

Hyper Universe, a free to play platforming MOBA, takes out this week's top spot. The player numbers might not hold a candle to the numerous other MOBAs out there however it has managed to retain a consistent audience which can be more than enough for most games. The game has been on Early Access since August last year (previously it had alphas/betas as a standalone game) and this release marked its official launch. In hindsight, the release was a good move, rocketing it up from an average of 30 or so players up to nearly 1000.

The trending section shows us a few interesting ways in which games can reach wider audiences. Angels Fall First was featured on the Steam front page and, noticing this, the devs decided to put it up for sale at 40% off. Slay the Spire, after being out for quite some time and garnering quite a following on its own, scored a few very positive reviews from some notable outlets. Whilst that might not be the whole reason it saw a big increase in players the timing of the reviews does suggest that they were a big influence.
