State of the Game this week has finally caught up to 2018 and will take a look at all the games released on Steam between the 1st and 7th of January. This time of year is always dreadfully slow for new releases and this week has been no exception. Whilst the number of titles was about on par for what we saw in 2017 only a handful made it into the triple digits in terms of concurrent players. WIth that in mind let's take a look at a few of the titles making a showing this week.

Antimony of Common Flowers, a 2D fighting game which is the latest in the long-running Touhou Project series, took out the top spot this week. The game is most popular in China which shouldn't be too surprising given that the game is only available in Chinese (a rarity on Steam). It also lays claim to the most well-received game this week with its review score topping 91% with over 800 reviews.

Realm Revolutions comes in at second although, in the grand scheme of things, it's doing far better than this week's number 1. In the following 2 weeks, this free to play idle game has managed to double its concurrent player count, mostly thanks to a steady stream of new content. If you're into this genre it may very well be worth looking into.

A couple of this week's trending titles will likely be familiar to everyone, thanks to their increased presence on Twitch and YouTube. Human Fall Flat has been on a steady upwards trajectory for some time now and, thanks to a renewed interest buoyed by its recent addition of multiplayer, it's begun to rocket skywards. Similarly, VRChat has found immense popularity because of...well I don't know how to describe it but to say "memes". I'm sure there's more to it than just that but certainly, it seems that most of the attention the title has gotten recently has been due to that.
