I have been following this game for a long time, ever since it was announced. As a longtime fan of the Stargate Series (Sg-1, Atlantis, AND SGU), I couldn’t help but get excited about this game. I wrote a post for The Extreme Pulse a few months back about it, when Daniel Shanks and Amanda Tapping confirmed they would be participating in the voice acting via twitter. Naturally, I couldn’t help but get incredibly excited. Between the original cast being a part of the game, and the fact that it would be much more than a basic Android/iOS game, I waited patiently for it to release. Well, the time came, and I have played it. Here are my thoughts.

Phenomenal, is the first word that comes to mind for me. For a mobile game, Stargate SG-1: Unleashed blew away all of my expectations. Currently, the one downside is that the game is on out on iOS at the moment, but after that everything is fantastic. The graphics of the game are superb for a mobile game, and when you add in the fact that the voice acting is done by the original actors, it’s a huge boon to how good the game and story are (so far). One thing to keep in mind, is that I am rating this in regards to how good a mobile game is, not a game in general.

Graphics:  For a smartphone/tablet game, this game has great graphics. I expected some decent, “blocky” graphics, like most of the games I’ve played on my tablets that are 3D. From the start, SG-1: Unleashed surprised me! The characters looked like spitting images of their TV counterparts, and the environments looked fantastic as well! The only downside to the graphics were that the character movements seemed a bit off for the characters in relation to the voice acting. But nothing is perfect!

Sound: With sound befitting the TV show itself, the game was improved upon even more by the voice acting. With Amanda Tapping (Samantha Carter), Richard Dean Anderson (Jack O’Neill), Christopher Judge (Teal’c), and Michael Shanks (Daniel Jackson) reprising their roles as their original characters, the game’s sound was rounded out by the always fantastic work of the members of SG-1. Unfortunately, the late Don S. Davis (General Hammond) was unable to join them. Even without him, the voice cast was phenomenal, even with the odd character movements at times. The voice acting really made the game great, thanks to the actors voicing their characters as if they were acting on the original show.

Gameplay: With a mix of puzzles, combat, exploration, and quick time events, the game is well rounded for a mobile game. The puzzles are pretty basic, but very enjoyable, and make up a small portion of the game. Exploring the environments was a really great part of the game, and really makes you feel the role of the character you are playing at during that time. There is also some combat sprinkled in as well, giving you three guns and some grenades to take down those dastardly Jaffa!

Story: Story is what really makes this game great. Being in an episodic format allows for a long game that was written by a Stargate novellist. Sticking to the Stargate spin on history, a whole new adventure begins to defeat the Goa’uld Sekhmet. Mixing in a spin on myth, science, and history, you won’t be disappointing by part one of this game.

This game, even at $4.99, is a perfect fit for any Stargate fan. We all miss SG-1, SGA, and SGU, and this interactive game allows us to jump right back in the action with our four favorite heroes. Even if you aren’t a Stargate fan, this game is one everyone should play at least once. It’s a truly enjoyable experience.

SG-1: Unleashed is a perfect way to bring back the world of Stargate in the form of a game.
