Starcraft FPS was reportedly in the works for more than two years before it was just recently axed by Blizzard Entertainment. While a potential Starcraft first-person shooter would have been pretty cool and the news is surely disappointing to fans of the franchise, there's also an upside to this story: resources from that game have been diverted to other projects. These were the somewhat expected Diablo 4 and the completely unexpected Overwatch 2.

Kotaku reports that three people familiar with the Starcraft FPS project stated that it was in a prototype stage where players commanded a Terran Marine that fought the Zerg. They were working on making playable Zerg in a game that would have essentially been a Battlefield-style game in the Starcraft universe. The cancellation of the project came as a surprise to people working on it as it was generally regarded to be making good progress.

Resources from the canceled Starcraft FPS project were diverted to other in-development games within Blizzard Entertainment. One of these projects is Diablo 4, something that Diablo fans have been hoping to see for some time. The news that Diablo 4 is reportedly in development won't come as a shock to fans who have been following the franchise.

The biggest surprise of this report, however, is the fact that something called Overwatch 2 is in development. According to sources familiar with the project, Overwatch 2 is going to have a large PVE element. Essentially, they describe it as "Left 4 Dead, but in the Overwatch universe."

Of course, it's entirely possible that Overwatch 2 is not a standalone game; rather, it could be the highly-anticipated Story Mode (or Campaign Mode, depending on what you'd call it) that players had been hoping to see for some time. There are already four distinct PVE missions available in the game: three have been created for the Overwatch Archives event and one has been created for the Halloween Terror event.

It's entirely possible that Overwatch 2 is simply the PVE portion of the game finally getting fleshed out and made into a year-round feature. Whatever the case may be, we'll supposedly hear more about Overwatch 2 and Diablo 4 at Blizzcon 2019. In the meantime, press F to pay respects for yet another Starcraft FPS.

What do you think of the canceled Starcraft FPS that would have played like a Battlefield game? Are you looking forward to Diablo 4 and what is being called Overwatch 2? Let us know in the comments below!
