Update: The original leaked trailer for the Spyro Reignited Trilogy has gone down. Fortunately, the official website for this trilogy of Spyro The Dragon remasters is now live. We've swapped out the leaked trailer for the official one. Our original story continues below.

Following several days of rumors picking up in pace, the return of Spyro The Dragon seemed all but certain after a French trailer for Spyro Reignited Trilogy leaked on gaming site jeuxvideo.com. It was confirmed shortly thereafter by an announcement tweet on the game's official Twitter account: Spyro is back.

The Spyro The Dragon series of games features an adorable little purple dragon that can run & glide through a fantasy world while he tries to save his fellow dragons who have been imprisoned in crystals. Over 20 million copies of the franchise's thirteen games have been sold over the years, but we haven't heard much from our favorite dragon since the last game released in 2008. Hints pointing towards a revival of the games have been popping up in recent days, and now a trailer for Spyro Reignited Trilogy has popped up on a French gaming site. Have a look at the game's trailer from the brand-new official YouTube account:

A few interesting events preceded this leak. First, a handful of game outlets such as IGN received scaly purple eggs in the mail with a note stating "Something's about to hatch" signed by "Falcon McBob". Searching for that name on Twitter brought up the unverified @SpyroTheDragon account which had been in a protected state. The protected status was removed in the last several hours and it began following a single account on Twitter - the official Crash Bandicoot account.

Rumors of the game were fanned by confidential sources speaking to some gaming outlets, and a Target-associated Twitter account accidentally referred to an upcoming Spyro trilogy in a (now-deleted) tweet. Then we started seeing listings for the game pop up on stores such as this one on Amazon's Indian website.

The Spyro Reignited Trilogy will include remasters of Spyro The DragonSpyro 2: Ripto's Rage!, and Spyro: Year of the Dragon in one convenient package. The game will be coming to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The three games will feature over 100 levels with remastered graphics fit for the modern era. Development is being handled by Toys For Bob, the company behind the Skylanders series of games. Spyro has featured as a playable character in those games with an associated toy, and he has starred in his own title in the franchise called Skylanders: Spyro's Adventure.

An Imgur Album has comparisons showing how the old games stack up to the remastered versions. If you're just interested in how good it all looks, here's a handy gallery with a selection of images:

Players who own the Crash Bandicoot N. Sane Trilogy can input a version of the Konami code (↑ ↑ ↓ ↓ ← → ← →□) on the Crash Bandicoot™ 3: Warped title screen to watch the trailer right from their console. Toys For Bob had assisted with development of the N. Sane Trilogy.

Spyro Reignited Trilogy has been recreated from the ground up. Levels from the original games have had additional bits of flair added in to flesh them out in the HD era of gaming. Tom Kenny - the voice of our hero in Ripto's Rage and Year of the Dragon - has returned to his role for all three games in the series. Stewart Copeland's soundtrack has been similarly improved with a complete re-imagining.

You'll be able to pick up the Spyro Reignited Trilogy for the PlayStation 4 or Xbox One for a suggested retail price of $39.99 or your regional equivalent on September 21, 2018. We'll be updating with additional details as they come in.
