Spyro: Reignited Trilogy launched last week, delighting new and old fans of the purple dragon. However, people were surprised and disappointed to discover that the game does not feature any options for subtitles during cutscenes.

Gamepitt also noticed the lack of subtitles in Spyro Reignited Trilogy and reached out to both Activision and Toys for Bob for a comment. Here's the response they got from Activision:

“When Toys For Bob set out to make an awesome game collection, there were certain decisions that needed to be made throughout the process. The team remained committed to keep the integrity and legacy of Spyro that fans remembered intact. The game was built from the ground up using a new engine for the team (Unreal 4) and was localized in languages that had not previously been attempted by the studio. While there’s no industry standard for subtitles, the studio and Activision care about the fans’ experience especially with respect to accessibility for people with different abilities, and will evaluate going forward.”

A pretty disappointing and oblivious comment from Activision. Most games have subtitles options so that should be considered an industry standard in itself. This comment ignores the needs of players who are hard of hearing, which is a significant portion of the population according to this study from the NHIS that estimated 13% of the US population was hard of hearing to some degree in 2003.

Subtitles are also useful for streamers and content creators on YouTube, as well as players (like me) who like to use subtitles despite not being hard of hearing.

Spyro: Reignited Trilogy is still an excellent collection of remastered games that hold up really well in 2018. The game has also seen some pretty amazing marketing, including this campaign to deliver Snoop Dogg a copy of the game from a giant fire-breathing Spyro drone.

What do you think? Have you been affected by the lack of subtitles? Do you think we'll get some in a future patch? Let us know in the comments!
