Despite receiving great praise from players, Sproggiwood, Freehold Games' Finnish mythology-inspired strategy RPG has flown somewhat under the radar of critics. One of Sproggiwood's signature traits is a unique and very cutesy art style that lands somewhere in-between Winnie the Pooh, Minecraft, and a Fisher-Price play set. It hit Steam in October of last year, and I'm a little shocked at the lack of attention it received. Today marks the release of the game's 1.2 patch (which might come as a surprise to players, as the game's last update was near the end of December). Fear not, however, as it appears that the developers are still showing some love for their customers with a patch crammed full of content.

Gameplay in Sproggiwood is reliant on many features that are sure to be comfortable to fans of class-based RPGs without getting too number-heavy. There are several diverse classes to choose from, and the town-management is slightly reminiscent of Harvest Moon. In the developers' own words:

"Sproggiwood distills the roguelike genre down to its core fun ingredients: inspired character classes, loads of interesting loot, and procedurally populated dungeons with monsters and traps that combine to produce totally unique tactical challenges. In Sproggiwood, adventure sessions are compact and chock-full of interesting choices for you to make. Each dungeon dive follows the heroic rise of one adventurer from your civilization. Journey through teeming forests, haunted swamps, teetering cliffs, and glacial mazes to uncover your civilization's whole story"
Sproggiwood follows many of the standard rules and regulations of the rogue-lite genre, which serves to make it more accessible than a traditional roguelike game at the expense of having less depth. They've often been scrutinized by more "hardcore" roguelike players for being too simple or for providing too little of a challenge, but their appeal is undeniable.

The 1.2 update adds a slew of new content and fixes a few bugs. In addition, as of version 1.2 the game's soundtrack is now available for purchase. Dubbed the "Savage" update, 1.2's namesake is the newly implemented Savage Mode, a much more difficult game mode with altered AI for enemy monsters.  Ten new Steam achievements, twelve new class-specific items, and a phone-friendly layout option are also included, among other things. Along with the patch, the "Enlightened Edition" of Sproggiwood, a bundle containing both the soundtrack and the game itself, was released today.

What do you think about Sproggiwood? Had you heard of it? If not, does it seem like the sort of game that appeals to you? What do you think about Finnish folklore? Did you even know Finland was a country? Yeah, I was surprised too.
