SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom was an action-adventure title developed Heavy Iron Studios (for the PlayStation 2, the Xbox, and the Gamecube), ported to the PC by AWE Games, and to the Game Boy Advance by Vicarious Visions. It was a quality release that went far beyond the standard licensed fare. The PC version became a point-and-click adventure, and the Game Boy Advance became a 2D platformer, whereas the original game was a 3D platformer. With such a versatile release history, the game seems primed for a remaster, and that’s what THQ Nordic has announced today.

Last year we had already reported that THQ Nordic intended to revive a list of Nickelodeon classics. This remaster, going by the rolling-off-the-tongue title SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated, seems to be the first of that original list, which also included Rugrats, Avatar: The Last Airbender, Invader Zim, Jimmy Neutron, Rocko’s Modern Life, and the truly unique The Ren & Stimpy Show, a classic of weirdness and degeneracy in children’s cartoons, which I’d like to see a game of myself, if it managed to rise above the usual licensed fare as SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom did.
The announcement teaser for the game is very concise and eloquent, as you can see below, which fans of the cartoon will surely enjoy.
THQ Nordic has been remarkably busy for the past few years, with dozens of acquisitions of studios and game properties, and it has also reported strong Q4 2018 earnings, which bolsters even more growth, with over 80 games in development. The publisher also announced on Twitter yesterday that they plan to announce three major titles in the next three days, the first of which is SpongeBob SquarePants: Battle for Bikini Bottom – Rehydrated. Two other games remain to be announced tomorrow and on Friday. Recent leaks would incline us to believe this is a new Darksiders game and a new Red Faction title, although other rumors place a Destroy All Humans remake as a possibility as well.
Three games, three days. Because the best things come in threes. Stay tuned.
