Zero Escape creator Kotaro Uchikoshi has announced murder-mystery game AI: The Somnium Files during Anime Expo 2018. Joining him is character designer and manga artist Yusuke Kozaki (Fire Emblem Awakening and No More Heroes). Little information is available at this time. We know it will star one detective Kaname Date in a technologically advanced Japan. Spike Chunsoft announced that AI: The Somnium Files will release worldwide on PC, PlayStation 4, and Nintendo Switch.

Some might be unaware of the other games Uchikoshi has developed. He has made a name for himself blending secret societies, out of place technology, and a healthy dose of murder. His most famous series is the Zero Escape trilogy, encompassing 999: 9 Hours 9 Persons 9 DoorsVirtue’s Last Reward, and Zero Time Dilemma999 is commonly regarded as one of the best DS games ever, and Virtue’s Last Reward is a worthy followup. Uchikoshi has also worked as a designer/director on a number of bizarre visual novels, covering everything from Ever17 -The Out of Infinity- to Punch Line. Many of his VNs are worth playing in their own right if only to enjoy the ride.

In keeping with Uchikoshi’s other mysterious works, the teaser site has a number of odd phrases plastered on the page, such as “Geostation Satellite X00639,” the “Wadjet System” and “Cyclops serial killings.” There’s a brief shot of gameplay in the teaser above, and it looks as though it could have come from a particularly bizarre world in Gravity Rush. There are horses impaled on poles, a strange amusement park, a girl with an impressive amount of hair, and none of it makes a lick of sense. For a teaser, it’s certainly interesting. Hopefully, we hear more about AI: The Somnium Files from Spike Chunsoft soon.
