One of the biggest video game companies in the world, Sony Entertainment, have made a landmark decision for the company and will be releasing the console exclusive title ReadySet Heroes on PC via the Epic Store. ReadSet Heroes is the first Sony Interactive Entertainment exclusive to make its way directly to the PC, although Sony's PS Now game streaming service is available on Windows PC's as well as on their flagship PlayStation 4 console.

The announcement comes only a few weeks after the head of Sony's game studios worldwide, Shawn Layden, said in an interview that we may see some of the console exclusive titles being released onto more platforms. Layden said: “We must support the PlayStation platform -- that is non-negotiable, that said, you will see in the future some titles coming out of my collection of studios which may need to lean into a wider installed base.”

Sony Games On Other Platforms

Although Sony games, in general, are pretty rare on PC, it is not unheard of the companies games to appear on desktop formats. The aforementioned PS Now service allows users to stream PS4, PS3 and PS2 games to PC's, even if they don't own a Sony console. In the past Daybreak Game Company, formally Sony Online Entertainment, developed EverQuest, an MMO which was available on both Mac OSx and Windows PC. As well as working towards PC releases Sony does own it's own mobile gaming studio, Forward Works, which has released several Japan-exclusive titles for both Android and Ios.

With the release of ReadySet Heroes and, seemingly, a new philosophy regarding releasing and publishing from SIE themselves, it is possible that we could see some major releases such as God of War and Spider-Man coming directly to PC before too much longer. With the Sony Music Entertainment subsidiary label, Unties, releasing successful titles on other markets it makes a lot of sense for Sony to start bringing their exclusive games to a wider audience. ReadySet Heroes will be released in October of 2019 and PC and PS4.

Quick Take

Well, this is an interesting turn up for and old PlayStation die-hard like myself. In recent years it almost seemed like we'd never see Sony embrace a more open and connected gaming world. If this shift towards PC releasing really does see major titles released for the PC then it will go some way towards showing the Sony is ready to change how it does things. I'm looking forward to seeing exactly how this one plays out.
