Sony is debuting its new PlayStation-focused video showcase State of Play on Monday.

The company announced its plans through a blog post on its official website. State of Play will essentially be Sony's answer to Nintendo Direct: updates, announcements, and news pertaining to PlayStation delivered straight to the consumer. The main difference is that Nintendo Direct videos are pre-recorded and scripted, while State of Play will be a live show (presumably not scripted). State of Play will therefore perhaps be more similar to Microsoft's Inside Xbox broadcasts.

Sony says the first episode of State of Play will show off upcoming PS4 and PS VR games, with new trailers, announcements, and gameplay footage on the way. They haven't said exactly which games they'll be showing yet. Interested parties can catch the broadcast on the official PlayStation Twitch, YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook channels. You'll be able to watch this worldwide, so don't worry about missing out. The first episode's going out on Monday, March 25th at 2:00 pm Pacific Time.

This news isn't exactly unprecedented. In November last year, Sony declared its plans to skip this year's E3 event, citing a desire to "innovative, think differently and experiment with new ways to delight gamers". In an interview with CNET in February, Sony exec Shawn Layden elaborated on Sony's reasons for wanting to skip the event, including a decline in the importance of retailers and a changing gaming industry.

Sony's no-show doesn't mean the end of E3. Companies like Bethesda and Microsoft will be holding conferences at the event as usual. If you're hoping for some big Sony reveals at the show in June, though, you're going to be disappointed. We still don't know if Sony's new State of Play broadcast will be regular, or when we can expect episode 2, so stay tuned.
