Sony announced their newest flagship smartphone, the Xperia Z3 Wednesday. Along with this announcement came the news that it would not be following suit with competitor phones, the LG G3, and Samsung Galaxy Note 4 in including a Quad HD screen.
In an interview with TrustedReviews, Calum MacDougall, Sony’s Director of Xperia Marketing gave some reasons why Sony is not chasing 2K resolution in its screens like its competitors.
Calum started his interview strong, pointing out that with such a small screen, even pushing the limits to an 8-inch display, the difference between true 1080p and 2K resolution is almost impossible to discern, making it a waste of an addition to their new device.
MacDougall later elaborates upon Sony’s focus on delivering strong battery life. “If we believe that a key part of the user experience for consumers is to have a longer term battery, and if we believe we can deliver a great screen with Full HD and our Sony technologies, we don’t believe the trade-off between having a 2K screen and battery consumption is the right trade-off for a consumer.”
The Xperia Z3 is expected to launch within the US, late Autumn of 2014 on T-mobile at an unknown price. It will feature a 2.5GHz quad-core Snapdragon 801 processor and 3GB of RAM, running Android 4.4.4 with Sony's own personal interface.
