Sega announced that Sonic Mania has been delayed from spring 2017 to summer during a panel at South by Southwest on March 16. The publisher also revealed that Project Sonic 2017 will be officially called Sonic Forces. This information also came from the same panel.

First, the Sonic Mania delay. Sonic Mania was originally announced in July of last year and was set to release sometime during spring 2017. You'll have to wait just a bit longer to get your hands on the 2D action-platformer, but we don't yet know how much longer since Sega did not specify when this summer it will be released.

Why was the game delayed? A Sega representative provided the following statement to IGN from Sonic Team head Takashi Iizuka:

For Sega, quality is most important. We stated this last year, and we are committed to doing whatever it takes to make Sonic games the highest quality possible. Though we like to go fast, sometimes, for a great game, you must also wait.
Sonic Mania was described by Sega as a way to bring Sonic back to its roots. The game will include both new stages and re-imagined classic ones. Sonic Mania will also include three playable characters: Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles.

As for Sonic Forces, that game is expected to come out sometime this holiday season. To accompany the official naming of the game, Sega finally revealed some gameplay that shows Sonic running through a city as the environment around him is being destroyed by giant robots.

Project Sonic 2017 was also announced in July of last year alongside Sonic Mania.

Both Sonic Mania and Sonic Forces will come out for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and PC. The collector’s edition of Sonic Mania is currently available for pre-order exclusively from Amazon in Europe, according to Sega.
