Smash Ultimate's 1.2.0 Patch Will Render Previous Replays Unplayable

If you're like me and have been playing Smash Ultimate obsessively, you might have noticed a new message about patch 1.2.0. This message notifies players that their previous replays will become unplayable come next week.

Don't worry, replays aren't gone forever, nor is there nothing you can do about your current ones. Replays, which are just clips of games you've saved in the past, need to be converted to video. The message says:

Version 1.2.0 will be distributed within the next week. Once you update the software, you won't be able to watch replays made with previous versions. If you have any replays you want to keep, go to Vault → Replays → Replay Data → Convert to Video. The patch notes will be released when the update goes live.
This might seem like a senseless move, but if you remember, this happened for Smash 4's 3DS and Wii U versions too. The reason behind this is because the replays record what buttons you press, and replay that match according to the inputs. If, say, King K. Rool got a speed nerf and reduced damage (and inevitably some characters are getting adjustments in 1.2.0) the game replay would simply not work as it did when you actually played the game. Therefore, it is necessary to convert your replays to video so everything plays out correctly.

Patch 1.2.0 will likely bring other changes too, but Nintendo hasn't disclosed what will be included. You can expect character changes, and hopefully some adjustments to the online. For now, just make sure you back up those replays!

Quick Take

Expect to do this often as I assume that Smash Ultimate will be a very patch-dependent game. With the number of characters there are, as well as the issues happening in the online mode right now, I would think that converting replays is going to be an activity we become all too familiar with.
