Slay the Spire Ascends To The Nintendo Switch On June 4

Update

A few minutes after we posted this article, Mega Crit Games published an update on Steam confirming that the Nintendo Switch release date of Slay the Spire is in fact June 6, not June 4, as reported below.

Original Story Below

Slay the Spire (Our Review) is a genre-defining single-player roguelike deckbuilding card game made by a duo of developers called Mega Crit. It first released on Steam Early Access in late 2017, where it became an Early Access phenomenon with an "Overwhelmingly Positive" reception. The final release came last January, and since then the developers have promised ports for the Nintendo Switch and the PlayStation 4. The Nintendo Switch was first promised even before the final release, in August last year, during the Nindies showreel. Last month there was an Announce Trailer for the PlayStation 4.

Today we have discovered that an estimated release date for the Nintendo Switch will be June 4, according to the Nintendo Switch Store. If you're based in the United States (or switch an eShop account to the US) you can see for yourself:

Slay the Spire Nintendo Switch Estimated Release Date June 4

The Nintendo Switch release will offer some good competition for the Switch exclusive SteamWorld Quest: Hand of Gilgamech (Our Review). In our interview with Brjann Sigurgeirsson, head of Swedish studio Image & Form that developed SteamWorld Quest there was some acknowledgment of the influence Slay the Spire had on the game:

TR: So, where did the inspiration for the card stuff come from then? My first thought was Slay the Spire, have you guys been playing that at all?

Brjann: I’m *sure* people have been playing that around here. This might surprise you, but I actually don’t play a lot of video games myself. I watch a lot more than I play. I find them too addictive, honestly [laughs]. So, I’ve seen a lot of that game and I’ve talked to our designers about it. There’s definitely some influence there, yeah. The way the cards are laid out is similar, the UI, etc. [However,] there are a few other games that served as inspirations. Baten Kaitos was a big one, for example, as well as Fate/Grand Order and Mega Man: Battle Network. They were our main inspirations, but we were definitely inspired by the look of Slay the Spire.

Last month we also had a chance to preview Nowhere Prophet, which I called a "Dustpunk Spire-like," much to the chagrin of the developer, who had been working on it long before he even heard about Slay the Spire. There are also quite a few clones popping up on Steam lately, to the point there's some discussion of it becoming its own little sub-genre. Slay the Spire has really heralded the birth of subgenre of roguelike card games that are here to stay, even if some Spire-likes aren't terribly innovative.

So if you've been waiting to play Slay the Spire on the go, here's your chance as the Nintendo Switch release is very close.
