Skylanders is a franchise that combines real-world toys and video games into an experience that bridges the real and virtual worlds. The concept sounds much like that of the amiibo, but it might surprise some people to hear that it debuted all the way back in 2011, four years before the first amiibos hit the shelves. Tens of millions of the franchise’s toys have been sold, and Skylanders: Spyro’s Adventure (the first game in the series) was the best-selling franchise in the first half of 2012.
Activision will be partnering with mobile developer Com2us to make a mobile RPG set in the Skylanders universe. They have a few mobile titles under their belt, but they are perhaps best known for Summoners War on Android and iOS. Com2us is based in South Korea and was originally founded in 1998 by a trio of university students. They’ve had a measure of success; in 2013, fellow South Korean mobile developer Gamevil acquired a bit over 21% of the Com2us for $65 million.
Neither the release date nor the platforms the game will be appearing on have been announced as of yet. In the meantime, fans of the bank-breaking collectible toys (and associated games) can check out the Skylanders Academy show on Netflix. It will be debuting its second season sometime in late 2017 and production of a third season is reportedly already underway.
