2D fighting game Skullgirls will be making its way onto mobile soon. Today publisher Autumn Games and LINE Corporation announced a partnership to bring the indie game to mobile platforms. Those looking to brawl on the go can expect a soft launch of the title in spring of this year.
Co-founder of Autumn Games, Jason Donell had this to say about the new partnership,
We’re honored to partner with LINE and its more than 220 million monthly active users, who are an important part of the mobile social fabric globally. We look forward to great success together bringing our highly anticipated ‘Skullgirls’ mobile franchise to gamers worldwide.
Jung Yeonhee, Executive Officer of LINE Games is equally optimistic about the Skullgirls mobile project saying,
We’ve released massive global mobile hits, including Disney’s ‘Tsum Tsum,’ but this agreement represents our first major U.S.‑ based developer publishing deal. Our platform is the perfect vehicle to engage existing fans and introduce new players to the action‑rich complex fighting experience.
Skullgirls was developed by Reverge Labs and was released on the PlayStation Network and Xbox Live Arcade in 2012 for North America, Europe and Australia. Since then it has also been released in Japan and made available for PC. It was announced during the Anime Expo in July 2016 that Hidden Variable Studios would be developing a mobile version of the game.
Charley Price, co‑founder and creative director of Hidden Variable had this to say about the mobile version of Skullgirls,
For fans everywhere, Skullgirls is synonymous with meticulously hand‑crafted quality that builds upon the grand traditions of the fighting game genre, perfecting it while also pushing it forward. We’ve spent nearly two years developing a mobile fighting game that anyone can play and enjoy – a game for both hardcore fighting game pros and those who merely admire fighting games from afar. We’re excited for Skullgirls to redefine and usher in the new age of mobile fighting games.
The mobile edition of Skullgirls aims to capture the complexity of fighting games in an approachable mobile gaming experience. The game will have RPG progression, customization and team‑/deck‑building mechanics. A “Fight Assist” mode will be available for players to use a more turn-based, tactical combat approach to battles.
Skullgirls mobile will be a free to play game when released for iOS and Android devices. A soft launch of the mobile title making it available to a small group of players will begin in the spring of 2017. The game will eventually be available world wide.
