Welcome to Shoestring Gaming, a weekly piece where I help highlight some of the bigger deals on games and tell you a bit about them. To give a big welcome to a new year of games and deals we’ll start off with plenty of free games and excellent bundles!
We’ll begin the year with something that everyone can enjoy – some nice free games. Akalabeth: World of Doom is currently free over at GoG. If you want to try out some old games then this is the one for you. Akalabeth is a text and vector based game originally released in 1979 in a limited release and then again in 1980 for the Apple II. Akalabeth is recognized by many as one of the very first role playing games and is considered the predecessor to the Ultima series. The aim of this game is to enter into the dungeons of Akalabeth and fight the foes present to try to rid the land of the darkness that has presented itself. Included with the download of Akalabeth (Windows, Mac and Linux) you also will receive the game manual and a wallpaper.
For today only (12/31/14), GoG is also having a “make your own” bundle on select Square Enix games. With the “Celebrate the new years with Square Enix” sale, you are able to add games from Square Enix franchises such as Deus Ex, Thief, Tomb Raider, Legacy of Kain and Hitman. The trick with this deal is that the more you add to your order the bigger the discount you are able to get. Each game on its own costs as low as $1.49 or you could get all 27 games together for $51.23, meaning that you can buy a single game for cheap or an entire series of games for a discount. Again this deal will only be available for today so be sure to jump on it while you can!
Starting tomorrow on the first of the month Games with Gold for January 2015 begins, where Xbox One gamers will be able to get D4: Dark Dreams Don’t Die and Xbox 360 gamers will get MX vs. ATV Alive. The January games for PlayStation Plus have not been revealed yet but expect plenty of free games for that as well.
