Rise of the Tomb Raider Story

According to a new update to the official Tomb Raider website, the next game in the series is to be revealed tomorrow (March 15, 6AM PDT). Further details have been accessed via the website's source code, with industry analyst Nibel revealing them on Twitter. According to the site's code, the game is titled Shadow of the Tomb Raider, a name previously leaked by an Edios Montreal employee who had information about it open on the train back in 2016.

There's even more which can be gleaned from the source code, including the fact that Shadow of the Tomb Raider will be "the climactic finale of Lara's origin story". There's also a release date too, with Sept 14, 2018, clearly shown in the code. The previous title, Rise of the Tomb Raider notably launched exclusively on Xbox One before coming to PlayStation 4 a year later. It seems that this will not be the case this time around with Xbox, PC, and PS4 listed as platforms. There's also a 'full reveal date' revealed in the code to be April , 2018,18 with "all pre-order incentives and SKUs" being revealed. There's mention of different editions, notably an explicit listing of a limited edition for all three platforms, a puzzle/contest of some sort as well and mention of a trailer, all within the aforementioned code.

Last December, publisher Square Enix put out a tweet stating that "it won't be very long between the official reveal and when you can play". It also states that the journey will begin with a "major event" in 2018. This is most likely alluding to the release of the Tomb Raider movie in the United States on March 16, which would be just after the Shadow of the Tomb Raider reveal.

The release of Shadow of the Tomb Raider would mark the third installment in the rebooted gaming franchise. The first released in 2013 and was developed by Crystal Dynamics and published by Square Enix. A sequel, Rise of the Tomb Raider followed in 2015, releasing exclusively for Xbox One until it was made available on PlayStation 4 the following year. A film based on the rebooted gaming series will release in the United States on March 16, starring Alicia Vikander as Lara Croft.
