Sentinels of the Multiverse the Video Game Key Art

Sentinels of the Multiverse the Video Game is a direct port by Handelabra Games of the excellent Sentinels of the Multiverse card game. Sentinels of the Multiverse the Video Game is a digital card game in which player(s) will be taking on the role of a team of up to 5 superheroes in an attempt to thwart one of the game's Villain. Players will need to coordinate the efforts of the chosen Heroes in an attempt to bring the chosen Villain to justice while avoiding potential hazards imposed by the Environment in which the battle takes place.

Sentinels of the Multiverse The Video Game -  Together or Alone

Although the hot-seat cooperative play is available, the game really shines as a single-player game with the player controlling the entire party of Heroes. Hero parties can be composed of 3 - 5 Heroes from the 10 Heroes available. Additionally, four of the Heroes have unlockable variant Hero cards that become available if the player completes certain hidden objectives during play.

Four Villains and four Environments are also included, and one of each will be chosen during play. Like the Heroes, two of the Villains also feature an unlockable variant. With the different options for Hero party choices, Villain choice, and Environment choice, the game offers, dare I say it, over 9000 different combinations. At the same time, it's a stretch to think that someone may play that many combinations; there is enough content on offer to keep a player entertained for many hours of play.

Sentinels of the Multiverse The Video Game - Gameplay

Players will be attempting to guide their chosen Hero team to victory by defeating the Villain. In most cases, this simply involves doing enough damage to the Villain to reduce it to zero hit points. The game will be lost if each Hero is reduced to zero hit-points, although some of the Villains also have additional win conditions that the player will need to watch out for. While the game can be played with a team of only three Heroes, I highly recommend playing with a full complement of five Heroes. The difficulty scales well with fewer Heroes, but the strategies and options available with a full team of five Heroes are just more fun.

While I slightly prefer the physical version over the digital version, Sentinels of the Multiverse the Video Game is great to have in addition to or as an alternative to the physical version. Fighting against a mad scientist with a team of Heroes while dinosaurs stomp around and volcanoes erupt in the background is quite enjoyable, both in cardboard and digital form.

Sentinels of the Multiverse the Video Game - Co-Op

Sentinels of the Multiverse offers cooperative play but only in a local, hot-seat mode. There is currently no online multiplayer included. This is unfortunate as Sentinels of the Multiverse shines as a cooperative experience. The game is challenging enough to stay interesting, yet it rarely feels frustrating. The number of Heroes and difficulty of the Villains can be adjusted in order to tailor the challenge to the player's skill level, allowing the game to remain a fun challenge even for veteran players of the card game.

The interface is easy to use, the game is stable and runs smoothly, and the graphics and presentation are very good. The art and theme of the card game translate very well to the computer screen. The music and sound effects enhance the theme, and the ability to unlock alternate versions of some of the Heroes and Villains is a fun and welcome feature.

The Verdict

Sentinels of the Multiverse the Video Game, is a great port of the card game. The lack of online multiplayer is unfortunate, but the game still offers a fun experience. I would recommend this version to anyone who is interested in Sentinels of the Multiverse but doesn't have a game group to play with in person regularly, and I would also recommend it to veteran players of Sentinels of the Multiverse who want another fun way to experience the game. The game captures the feel and fun of the card game and pairs it with slick production values and an easy-to-use interface.
