SEGA Sammy Holdings Road To 2020

SEGA is planning a “major revival” of some of its classic intellectual properties before 2020 as reported by Destructoid.

The details come from a document detailing the future business plans of SEGA Sammy Holdings [PDF]. One statement of particular note in the document is “Reinforce various IP measures including reutilization of dormant IPs, in addition to existing IPs”. The document is peppered with similar language, showcasing an emphasis on leveraging some of their older games and franchises that may not have been around for a while.

Of course, SEGA Sammy Holdings is a rather large company with diverse interests and the document doesn’t just cover video games. Like quite a few other Japanese game developers, SEGA has interests in arcades, pachinko parlors, toys, animations, and (strangely) luxury resorts. A casual glance of the plans shows that the company plans to trim a bit of fat over the next year and then focus on growth by expanding evenly across multiple platforms and markets. Going by the listed numbers, one thing we can be certain of is that they don’t seem keen on abandoning traditional video games in favor of pachinko machines and other gambling devices as Konami has done. Nonetheless, these particular areas of entertainment will comprise a good portion of the company’s overall holdings in the coming years.

SEGA Sammy Holdings Expand IPs
SEGA Sammy Holdings is looking to think a little more globally with their intellectual properties.

Although the Japanese game developer has stated that they’re going to be bringing back some of their older games in one way or another, they haven’t named any specific titles. Some potential franchises that could make their way back are Crazy Taxi, Jet Set Radio, and Streets of Rage. In any case, it looks like we may be seeing some old favorites make a return.

What do you think of SEGA Sammy Holdings planning to revive some of its older intellectual properties? Which games or franchises do you think they will try to revive first and foremost? Which IPs would you personally like to see make a return? Let us know in the comments below!
