The final 12 games in the lineup for the Sega Genesis Mini console have been announced. The total number of games will in fact be 42, rather than the 40 previously announced for the device.

Joining the lineup first is Tetris, everyone's favorite puzzler. Sega developed this version of the game in-house and originally planned to release it for the Genesis. Licensing issues meant the company had to pull the game from sale, so less than ten physical copies of Tetris now exist. It's very, very probable this'll be the first time you'll experience Sega's version of Tetris. Have no fear, though: it's still the same block-based puzzle game you know and love.

Sega is also bringing arcade shooter Darius to the Genesis Mini. Darius was never originally released for the Genesis (although sequel Darius II did get a look-in on the console). This version of Darius is an entirely new port, so if you're worried you missed out on the Genesis version the first time around, don't worry - you didn't. The original arcade version of Darius used three monitors and a mirror to create a widescreen experience, but you won't need three screens to play this one.

Alongside these two rarities, Sega also announced the rest of its Genesis Mini lineup. The rest of these games are decidedly less rare but no less great. Here's the full list of the other 10 games in western territories:

  • Virtua Fighter 2
  • Alisia Dragoon
  • Monster World IV
  • Kid Chameleon
  • Road Rash II
  • Eternal Champions
  • Columns
  • Dynamite Headdy
  • Strider
  • Light Crusader
Rather confusingly, there are actually three versions of the Sega Genesis Mini. The first is the Western variant, which features exclusive games like Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine and Ecco the Dolphin. The second is the Japanese console, on which you can play games like Puyo Puyo 2 and Langrisser II. Finally, Sega is releasing a third version in Asia but not in Japan. This version boasts five exclusives: Alien SoldierPuyo PuyoOutrun 2019Shining Force II, and Sword of Vermilion. It's probably worth trying to pick up the Asian version just for Shining Force II if nothing else.

Finally, if you'd like to recreate the experience of attaching all kinds of monstrously huge add-ons to your Sega Genesis, you're in luck (sort of). Sega will be releasing some rather cute accessories for the Japanese Sega Genesis Mini. These accessories replicate the appearance of Genesis accessories. There's a dinky Sega CD, a tiny 32X, a Sonic and Knuckles-style lock-on cartridge, and a replica Sonic the Hedgehog cart. According to Famitsu, the accessories will launch (in Japan) on the same day as the console. Unfortunately, we don't know if these will be available outside Japan yet. Don't worry - they don't actually do anything, so you're not really missing out if you can't get them. That said, there's something nostalgic about tricking out the Genesis with all its bulky extras.

The Sega Genesis Mini will launch on September 19th. It'll cost you $79.99 and will come with two replica controllers. You can find more info over on the console's official website.
