Announced during Sega Fest 2018 yesterday, classic games from the SEGA Genesis and Master System will be coming to the Nintendo Switch sometime this Summer. Releasing under the Sega Ages label, classics such as Sonic the Hedgehog, Phantasy Star, Thunder Force 4, and more will be making their way to the Switch.

In total, there will be 15 Sega Ages games released on the Switch, three of which have been announced above. Sega Ages has been a long-used label by SEGA for re-releasing games on newer hardware, beginning way back 1996 on the SEGA Saturn.

M2, a company who specializes in emulation for re-released games, is leading the project for Sonic Ages games on the Switch. They have a lot of experience, particularly with SEGA games, as they've long been used to port games onto things like Nintendo's Virtual Console for the 3DS. If you enjoyed the 3D Classics re-releases on the Nintendo 3DS, including the original Sonic the Hedgehog, M2 handled getting the games running on the hardware.

More games coming to Sega Ages Switch lineup should be announced as we get closer to summer, so stay tuned for more information.

Quick Take

It's interesting to see companies like SEGA creating and releasing games on their own in this way without the Virtual Console, which seems to be in a perpetual state of delays. They aren't the first to do this, but games like Sonic the Hedgehog may be the most high profile so far. It just makes you wonder what Nintendo is dragging their feet for and when we'll see the Virtual Console on the Switch come to be, as it's clear some companies would rather not wait.

What games do you hope make it onto the Nintendo Switch from the Genesis or Master System? What do you think of the choice of Sega Ages Switch rather than a collection like PlayStation 4 and Xbox One got? Let us know in the comments below!
