Sega has announced that a collection of over 50 classic Sega Mega Drive/Genesis games is coming to PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. The Mega Drive/Genesis Collection will release both digitally and physically on May 29 2018.

The news comes alongside a nostalgia-filled trailer showing off some of the games you can expect from the new collection. It's not just a repackaging of old wares, however, with a press release stating that many are being updated with modern features. These new features include online multiplayer, achievements, mirror modes, rewind and save states.  It's worth noting that a collection was already recently released on PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Steam, so it is likely that the new collection will share the same roster of games, with a few added on. The current Steam version will be updated to parity with the new versions when they launch on May 29, meaning things like online multiplayer will be added.

In the trailer (which you can watch below) we see Alex Kidd, Golden Axe, Sonic the Hedgehog, Altered Beast, Space Harrier, Gunstar Heroes, and The Revenge Of Shinobi. What the physical editions of the collection will include has been detailed though, with a double-sided Golden Axe and Streets of Rage being offered. Digital bonuses are said to be revealed at a later date. The full list of games is at the end of this article.

The Sega Mega Drive, branded as the Genesis in North America, was initially released in Japan in 1988. The console then came to North America in 1989  before finally arriving in other territories in 1990. It was the successor to the Sega Master System and boasted a 16-bit microprocessor and was mostly backward-compatible with the 8-bit Sega Master System via the Power Base Converter peripheral. The Sega Genesis received two upgrades during its life cycle in the form of the Sega CD, and the Sega 32X.
