It just keeps happening. Sega is producing a microconsole based on the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive. Less than a year ago, a Mini version of the Genesis was announced, and that ATGames would be developing it. However, that was delayed, and ATGames’ involvement came to an end. Now, at Sega FES 2019, a new version made in conjunction with Sega Ages developer M2 will be coming September 19.
Sega did not give many details, but there will be two SKU’s for Japan – a single controller version for 6980 Yen (~62.95 USD) and a two controller variant for 8980 Yen (~80.99 USD). The US release will have a single SKU with two controllers and retail for $79.99. They are based on the original Model 1 Genesis' design, and the American version uses the classic 3 button controller, while the Japanese version is shipping with the 6 button controller. Based on a size comparison video, it seems unlikely it will be able to play original Genesis cartridges as making this more like Nintendo and Sony's mini-consoles.
Unlike the previous iterations of a plug and play Genesis, this model will largely be developed in-house. Sega's US website proclaims that it is "Made by SEGA, Genesis Mini delivers quality as only a 1st party product can."
Sega has said that it will include 40 games, and ten of them have been announced with the following for North America and PAL regions:
- Ecco the Dolphin - Castlevania Bloodlines - Space Harrier III - Shining Force - Dr. Robotnik's Mean Bean Machine - ToeJam & Earl - Comix Zone - Sonic the Hedgehog - Altered Beast - Gunstar Heroes
For Japan:
- Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - Puyo Puyo Tsu - Shining Force - Vampire Killer (Castlevania: Bloodlines in North America, Castlevania: The New Generation in PAL Reigons) - Wrestleball - Gunstar Heroes - Comix Zone - Rent A Hero - Space Harrier II - Madou Monogatari
Some of these games were Japan-only, and it is unknown if they will appear in other regions, or if some games will be exclusives. The Japanese version was announced to have multiple versions of Vampire Killer, which had various regional tweaks done, such as replacing the blood on the title screen with water in PAL regions.
Sega has also said that more games will be announced during a Famitsu Live Stream on April 18, at least for the Japanese line up.
