Square Enix has released a port of the popular Super Nintendo game Secret of Mana for Android Devices on October 30th. Secret of Mana is an old RPG hack-and-slash game similar to Ys that was made in the early 90’s. This comes as a big “About time!” for many SoM fans, as this game was released for the Wii’s Virtual Console in 2008, and for iOS devices through iTunes in 2010, so this release has really been a long time coming.

It is up for sale at the Android Playstore for a whopping 9 dollars.

I’m curious how well this game works on a mobile device. Turn-based, menu driven games, like Final Fantasy games, for example, work beautifully, if anything, they work better on a touchscreen as menu driven controls fit perfectly with touch controls. A real-time action based game, on the other hand, could be a bit tricky on a touch device without a proper physical d-pad.

Squeenix mobile games are usually a mess. Poorly ported, without proper pad support, no filter options and some are locked in portrait resolution. I’ll keep playing it on Snes9x instead.
