Samurai Shodown V Special Blood

Samurai Shodown V Special, a fighting game published by SNK Corporation notable for having its home console version heavily censored on release, is making its way to the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita this Summer uncensored.

Samurai Shodown is a series of fighting games set in Japan during the late 18th century. Famine has gripped the land, and the overall situation in the country is rather chaotic. Although "Samurai" is in the title, Samurai Shodown only features a handful of characters that are actually members of Japan's notable warrior class. The game's story utilizes a lot of artistic license to allow for foreign characters to be present in the game (despite the timelines being off) for the sake of an interesting story.

As detailed in the PlayStation Blog post on the game, a violent incident in Japan prior to the release of the home version of the game resulted in last-minute censorship to the title. The arcade version featured bloody finishing moves similar to Mortal Kombat and it had already been attracting a degree of controversy. The censorship introduced a number of bugs into the title, making for a less-than-ideal console experience for fans of the series.

A decade after the original release, the proper uncensored version of Samurai Shodown V Special will be made available on home consoles for the first time. SNK Corporation and Code Mystics are working on the base originally put together by former developer Yuki Enterprise in order to restore this title to its former glory. Aside from removing the censorship, a number of bug fixes will be taking place to correct the mistakes of the previous home release of the title. The PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita releases will also feature modern improvements such as online play and extra features like an art gallery.

EVO 2017 attendees will be able to see the game in action at SNK Playmore's booth if they'd like to have a gander. Samurai Shodown V Special will release for the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation Vita sometime in Summer 2017.

What do you think of the Samurai Shodown series of games? Did you have a particular favorite in the franchise? Do you believe that the last-minute censorship in the home version of the game was appropriate given the circumstances at the time? Let us know in the comments below!
