Within one month of its release, third-person co-op shooter World War Z has sold almost 2 million units - prompting the release of a trailer and details of upcoming content. Inspired by the 2013 film of the same name (which shares little with the book of the same name), the game effectively captures the surging spectacle of the film’s zombie hordes, pitting players against them in an endless stream of gore and gunfire - which players have clearly found attractive.
Commemorating this impressive feat, developer Saber Interactive and co-publisher Focus Home Interactive have released an Accolades trailer, depicting intense undead skirmishes and celebrating the critical praise it has received.

“World War Z has fast become one of our most successful interactive games to date,” said Josh Austin, Senior Vice President, WW Licensing & Interactive at Paramount Pictures. “It’s a testament to both the incredible co-op action experience that Saber Interactive and Focus Home Interactive have crafted, as well as the strong appeal of our hit franchise with fans across the globe.”
Contributing substantially to these sales is the controversial Epic Games Store, on which World War Z remains a PC exclusive. As reported by Gamasutra, as of May 2, the store had accounted for 320,000 of the title’s already considerable sales. Despite the negativity surrounding the marketplace’s exclusivity for some titles, clearly, it is successfully facilitating sales.
Also recently announced is the first season of free content, releasing in the coming months, including a Tokyo mission and a new zombie type, as well as the introduction of a six-skull difficulty setting, Weekly Challenge mode and cosmetics. Future seasons will give players access to a wave-based survival mode, private lobbies, and more technical options on PC including FOV and level of detail sliders.
World War Z was received with relative warmth upon release, many considering it a somewhat formulaic zombie shooter title with gratifying gameplay and spectacle. TechRaptor reviewed this game upon release, praising the satisfying, gory shooting and impressiveness the sheer volume of zombies on-screen, but criticizing the eventual monotony of the unchanging combat. Noted within the review is the sheer satisfaction of mowing down the zombie hordes, and the speed with which lobbies filled upon - it is little wonder that this title has sold as well as it did even if it is a shame
World War Z is available on PC (via the Epic Game Store where it is available for $19.99 as part of the Epic Mega Sale), PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
