Runner3 will be released for Nintendo Switch and Steam on May 22nd, publisher Nicalis has confirmed.

This news arrives alongside a brand new release trailer which shows off the game's colorful visuals and use of perspective. Like its predecessors, Runner3 will take the form of an autorunner-style platforming hybrid, complete with "so-tough-your-head-might-explode challenge stages", as Nicalis calls them.

Gameplay-wise, according to Nicalis, Runner3 "follows in the flamboyant footsteps of its predecessors", offering players the chance to "jump, slide, kick, bounce and boogie [their] way past enemies and obstacles". Development is being handled by Choice Provisions, previously known as Gaijin Games, who developed Runner2 as well as many other titles in the Bit.Trip series.

Runner3 is the latest in the Bit.Trip Runner spin-off series. Serving as a sequel to 2013's rather wordily-titled Bit.Trip Presents...Runner2: Future Legend of Rhythm Alien, the decidedly less verbose Runner3 once again stars series protagonist CommanderVideo. This time, according to Nicalis, he's out to stop "the terrible, treacherous, troublemaking Timbletot".

Fans of the series can also expect the return of Runner2's narrator Charles Martinet, most famous as the voice of Mario since Super Mario 64, as well as the dragon Paarthurnax in Skyrim. Also back from Runner2 is secondary series protagonist CommandgirlVideo, as well as a promised roster of "numerous friends, top-secret guest stars and Dave".

On the day of its release, Runner3 will be available for Nintendo Switch eShop and on Steam. Fans can also purchase a physical collectors' edition for Switch. This package includes the game, a full-color instruction manual, a mini soundtrack sampler CD and a PVC CommanderVideo strap which lights up. Runner3 will be available to purchase, either in physical form or via download, on May 22nd.
