Update

It was officially announced during the Epic Games keynote today that The Outer Worlds will be a one year Epic Game Store and Windows Store exclusive on PC. You can read more about The Outers Worlds exclusive in our article on it here.

Original Story Below

The Outer Worlds, a new single-player RPG developed by Obsidian Entertainment, could be a timed exclusive on the Epic Games Store on PC.

In a recent tweet (now deleted), PC gaming outlet PCGamesN announced that The Outer Worlds - along with "a suite of upcoming titles" - would launch exclusively on the Epic Games Store. The tweet was posted out with a Castlevania: Symphony of the Night image accompanying it and was quickly deleted, which didn't stop eagle-eyed followers from screen-grabbing it.

Since the image isn't related to the headline and a news story subsequently appeared on PCGamesN regarding Castlevania and Contra PC releases this summer, it's not unreasonable to assume the story was either prematurely posted or mistaken. That said, it's an oddly specific thing to be flat-out wrong about, and given the recent spate of titles declared to be timed Epic Games Store exclusives it wouldn't come as a massive surprise.

It's also not a move without a certain degree of precedent. The Outer Worlds' publisher is Private Division, a subsidiary of Take-Two Interactive. Speaking to GamesIndustry.biz, Take-Two's CEO intimated that the Epic Games Store would be good for the company's business model. At the time of writing, nothing on The Outer Worlds' official Steam page indicates any impending changes. Epic Store exclusives tend to be timed for a year before being released on other platforms, so if The Outer Worlds is exclusive it likely won't be permanent. In a recent Game Informer interview, the team behind The Outer Worlds confirmed the game would definitely be coming to Steam, but that doesn't necessarily preclude Epic Games Store timed exclusivity.

The Epic Games Store has been mired in controversy since its debut in December 2018. Several titles including Metro Exodus, Julian Gollop's upcoming Phoenix Point, and Supergiant Games' Hades have all been declared as Epic Store exclusives, and some consumers - as well as some developers - haven't been happy about this. Epic Games is giving a conference at GDC later today, and although the conference is billed as being tech- and developer-focused, it's not unrealistic to expect some sort of announcement regarding the alleged spate of new Epic Games Store exclusives. We'll have more news for you on this when we get it.
