Flash sales may be returning to Steam in some form according to a tweet from Valve News Network founder Tyler McVicker.

There are quite a few gamers out in the world who happily buy a bunch of great games during sales, whether it's on Steam or somewhere else. A particular practice that is still used on many sites is Flash Sales - a short period of time (typically 8-12 hours) where a game is at an even better discount than usual. Valve made use of Flash Sales themselves up until the Autumn of 2015 where they discontinued the practice; the special short-term deals haven't made a return since.

However, it seems that things might be changing. Tyler McVicker of the Valve News Network claims to have received information that Flash Sales are coming back. Developers will be able to choose between durations of 6, 8, 10, or 12 hours for the duration of the sale.

I communicated with Mr. McVicker about the image in the above tweet. In his view, it appears to be some strings that were presented to a user on the Steam Translation Server, a community-based service run by Valve to help make the digital distribution service easier to read in other languages. While I'll happily concur with his assessment, he stated that all he has received is the same image file that was uploaded to Twitter.

For that reason, we can't really trust a single screenshot as being an authentic indication that Steam's Flash Sales may be returning at some point. I've reached out to Valve for comment on the matter and we'll update this piece when we hear back from them. The next anticipated sitewide Steam sale will likely be the Halloween Sale towards the end of October, so if anything we might find out for certain in three months or so.

What do you think of the possible return of Flash Sales to Steam? Did you like them or do you prefer the simpler system that's used today? Let us know in the comments below!
