A Redditor going by the name of /u/droptheverse posted an image to the /r/reddeadredemption subreddit of pre-order cards for Red Dead Redemption 2  and stated that Target will begin taking pre-orders on February 5th, 2017.

The image was posted late Saturday afternoon to the Subreddit for the Red Dead Redemption series of games. Judging by the appearances of the cards in other articles such as this one from Nintendo Today and this one from Gamepur, the purported pre-order card seems to be visually consistent with Target’s design.

Daily Star wrote a piece on the rumor and noted an interesting fact about the potential sale date – it’s the same date as Superbowl LI. Opening pre-orders on game day would give Rockstar Games the opportunity to run an ad during one of the most-watched television events in America. The NFL’s yearly Superbowl game is famed for its television advertisements; advertisers tend to pull out all the stops and get creative with the limited amount of time they have. That time comes at a premium – In 2015, CBS charged $5 million for a 30-second ad spot during the game.

As for Rockstar Games, all they’ve said on the matter of the game’s release is that it’s slated to come out sometime in Fall 2017.

Quick Take

The picture does seem to be visually consistent with Target’s pre-order cards for video games, and it would make sense that Rockstar would release Red Dead Redemption 2 for pre-order during a high profile event like the Super Bowl. Still, there’s only the one solitary source on this date; no matter how good the picture looks, we won’t really know for sure until we hear from Rockstar themselves.

Do you think the image posted by /u/droptheverse is genuine? Do you think that Rockstar Games would open up pre-orders for Red Dead Redemption 2 on the same day as the Superbowl? Do you think the game will be as good as its predecessor? Let us know in the comments below!

I've had a controller in my hand since I was 4 and I haven't stopped gaming since. CCGs, Tabletop Games, Pen & Paper RPGs - I've tried a whole bunch of stuff over the years and I'm always looking to try more!

Really looking forward to this game and sincerely hope it makes it to the pc. That being said, friends don’t let friends pre-order.

  • I really wish more developers would take the time to port games to PC. I haven’t owned a console for years, and while PC porting has its costs and difficulties I’m sure they’re leaving money on the table for no good reason. I’d buy the original RDR and this one on the PC in a heartbeat if it were available because I sure as hell ain’t gonna drop several hundred bucks on a console for one game (no matter how good it is).

I’d also buy the original were they to port it decently; I suspect a lot of people would. And while I wouldn’t bet any money on that becoming a reality, I would bet money that the sequel will have a pc release. GTA5 has done so incredibly well it’s nearly impossible for me to picture a future where they decide not to port it. I think a better question is whether the pc port is available on release, or if there’s a delay again.

I have to agree. I was so pissed at rockstar for not releasing gtaV on PC that I have yet to play it. I’m sorry to say I think I will do the same with rdr2. It really feels like a snub from rockstar to the platform that made them who they are today.

  • …but GTA V is on PC. Granted it was delayed, but it’s on there. The PC port is pretty decent overall, IMO.

This is true. And I hear it’s great. But 2 years after the fact, and the price was still $80. Hardly ever falling below $60, even on sale. I’m just fed up with rockstar and have no desire to give them my money.

  • I was in your exact position myself, but Rockstar has recently changed course on this. I bought it for $39.99 in August of 2016, and I’ve seen it on sale for as low as $29.99. I think it’s even dipped lower than that occasionally. I expect that it will be on sale again in the coming months, and I can confidently state that the single player alone is worth thirty bucks.

The multiplayer, eh. It’s so-so, to be honest.

You’re right. I may pick it up if I see a sale. I guess it’s just really disheartening to see the lack of consideration for PC at launch. You look at a dev like cd projekt red, and in my opinion, they are the ones doing it right.
