Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga DX may have an impending 3DS release. ProjectPokemon.org hacker and dataminer SciresM discovered values that correspond to the game. He had previously gathered information on The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild before release in January.

Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga DX was originally released for the Game Boy Advance in 2003 as Mario & Luigi: Superstar Saga. Unlike most Mario games, Superstar Saga DX was an RPG, with an emphasis on controlling both Mario and Luigi at the same time. It also used a real-time battling system as opposed to the more common turn-based system for Mario RPGs.

It is likely that this will be a 3DS release, as per Nintendo's title ID's, the 0004 line has been used for 3DS titles. There is no indication that anything has changed there.

It is unclear if this is a Virtual Console rerelease or a remaster of the original game. The 3DS under normal circumstances is not able to emulate Game Boy Advance games due to processor limitations. Early adopters of the 3DS that purchased their systems before a price drop became part of the Nintendo 3DS Ambassador program. They were given ten Game Boy Advance games, including Metroid Fusion, The Legend of Zelda: The Minish Cap, and F-Zero: Maximum Velocity. However, the 3DS had to underclock its processor in order to play these games, as they were run natively rather than emulating it through the virtual console. As a result, the 3DS’ OS, wireless, sleep, and other functionality are turned off while running these games. If it is a Virtual Console release, it is possible it will be a New 3DS/New 2DS exclusive, similar to the SNES games on the Virtual Console.

However, the DX suffix was not part of the original title, and was previously used on The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening DX, which added color and an additional dungeon to the original. Super Mario Bros Deluxe was also released and contained extra stages and graphical enhancements. That would appear to make this the more likely option overall given the DX in the title.

Nintendo has not officially announced anything related to the game’s release or existence. However, Nintendo has stated that they are committed to supporting the 3DS, so it may be announced at E3 in June. We have reached out to Nintendo, and we will update this if we learn more or get a response.
