Anyone with even just a passing interest in video games has probably heard of Tom Clancy's The Division by now. Ubisoft Massive's MMOFPS to generally favorable reviews but quickly became a notorious title due the game's stark lack of polish and the numerous bugs that plagued the player base. While all of this should be more than enough reason to disregard the game until they fix it, that doesn't mean that the franchise is entirely without merit.

In a report by Variety, the publication reports that their sources have confirmed that The Division is being picked up for an adaptation to the silver screen. Ubisoft has apparently already started producing a movie based on Ubisoft's fastest-selling IP to date. These same sources also say that actor Jake Gyllenhaal (Jarhead, Nightcrawler, and Prince of Persia) has been brought on as a producer of the film in addition to acting. There is no writer attached to the project as of yet, but Ubisoft has reportedly begun searching for one.

This isn't the only movie project Ubisoft is involved in at the moment. The Assassin's Creed movie starring Michael Fassbender (X-Men, Prometheus) is currently in development (with tickets available for pre-order), and a movie based on Splinter Cell starring Tom Hardy is also in development at Paramount Studios.

But, as always, this is just a rumor for now so take it with a grain of salt. All we know is that Gyllenhaal would look less out of place as an American sleeper agent than as a Persian prince in Prince of Persia's movie adaptation.

Quick Take

Whatever you might think of The Division as a video game, the game's world and story could make for a tense movie that goes above and beyond the story told within the game. Gyllenhaal is a pretty great actor as well and I'd love to see what he and a team of screenwriters can do with Ubisoft's IP. One to watch, perhaps.

I've been playing games since I was just barely able to walk so I might as well write about them.
