In a world where micro transactions and free to play functions have become the norm, mobile platforms can sometimes be seen as a bit of a joke amongst the majority of the gaming community. However, it has just been announced that Frontier Developments is fighting this standard by releasing one of the most popular simulation games of all time, Roller Coaster Tycoon 3, on iOS platforms the way it was intended to be played: free of in game transactions.

Instead of money devouring in app purchases or waiting hours to build your next section of rollercoaster, Rollercoaster Tycoon 3 is now out on iOS platforms for $4.99 (4,49€, £3.99) with full touch screen capabilities.

In terms of how it stacks up to the original PC version, their press release had this to say:

"RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 for iOS features all 18 scenarios from the original PC game, five park themes, 100 pre-built rollercoasters, the fully-featured rollercoaster creator, and the complete original sandbox mode where creativity can run wild. An in-depth management simulation drives the performance of the park, as players thrill guests with rides and entertainment, earning money to dream and build even bigger."
The new RollerCoaster Tycoon 3 for iOS is supported on iPad Mini 2 (2013), iPad Mini 3 (2014), iPad Air (2013), iPad Air 2 (2014), iPhone 5S (2014), iPhone 6 (2014) and iPhone 6+ (2014).

Frontier Developments has also been working on Planet Coaster, a PC game which will be available in 2016. It promises to embody the spirit of the old "Tycoon" titles.

Quick Take

It's good to see a company putting such a strong emphasis on the fact that they are staying away from micro transactions and other unsavory mobile gaming functions. The Roller Coaster Tycoon series is an absolute classic and I think it would work well on the iPad, though I think might not play so well on the smaller iPhone screen.
