If it hasn’t been on your radar yet, you might want to look into Vambrace: Cold Soul. This title from the developers of The Coma: Recut is a self-described “roguelike fantasy adventure” and is coming this Spring. Vambrace: Cold Soul launches on April 25th, 2019 for PC and Mac. A console release for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox will follow sometime in Q3 2019.

This title looks like a more story-driven Darkest Dungeon that spans 7 different chapters and features different classes and races that can be recruited in your party. Players create their own parties based on their preferences and go on turn-based, side-scrolling expeditions.

There’s also an overworld component – or rather, underworld – in an underground city that takes a more top-down point of view. Players can experience aspects of the story and create their party here, then embark on “expeditions” located on the surface. According to the release date announcement, the story is as follows:

The King of Shades has cursed the great city of Icenaire. Now cast under a permanent blight of frost fall, its former residents have returned from the dead as mad Wraiths. Survivors take refuge deep underground where they lead a desperate campaign against this unearthly power. Woefully outmatched, they are forced into hiding as the King of Shades amasses an army of the undead above them. One fateful day, a mysterious stranger appears in the city with an enchanted vambrace. Now, she may be their only hope…

There is also a crafting component and perma-death as well, true to the roguelike genre. Lastly, it boasts a beautiful hand-drawn style that compliments its gothic-inspired theme.

The adventure that is Vambrace: Cold Soul awaits you on April 25th, 2019 when it releases on PC and Mac, and on consoles soon in Q3 2019.

Quick Take

This title looks like it scratches that Darkest Dungeon itch that fans of the game are all too familiar with. I remember stumbling upon this game while browsing Steam some time ago, and I was immediately drawn to its visuals. When I found out it was a fantasy roguelike too, I was very excited. I am not familiar with developer Devespresso Games’ previous work, but I’m certainly excited to see how Vambrace: Cold Soul turns out.

I love to write, and I love to game. So, I've combined those two hobbies into one! Some of my favorite games include Fire Emblem, Halo, The Elder Scrolls, and World of Warcraft. Sometimes I like to read the occasional fantasy novel, too!
