Update: 10/3/2016

TechRaptor staff have received a reply from Capcom in regards to our inquiry yesterday. It reads as follows:

"Thanks for checking in.

Resident Evil 7 biohazard will be available for PlayStation VR at launch on 24th January, 2017. Capcom has not confirmed any other VR formats at this time."

The original story follows below

An ad has surfaced that may indicate that Capcom's next title in the Resident Evil franchise, Resident Evil VII: Biohazard, will have a period of exclusivity on Sony's PlayStation VR headset.

The ad in question (seen below) was posted to /r/residentevil, a Resident Evil forum on reddit, by a user named Xx-MCXCVI-xX; Xx-MCXCVI-xX claims to have found this ad while using the social media website Facebook. This ad indicates that the Capcom title will have a period of exclusivity of twelve months for the PlayStation VR after its release.

An alternative source for this ad was found on NeoGAF; in addition to the ad for Resident Evil VII: Biohazard, there is another ad for Batman: Arkham VR discussed there, which will apparently be a PlayStation VR exclusive until March 31, 2017.

Neither Capcom nor Sony have made any public comments on their social media accounts regarding this ad, nor if there are any plans for future VR support on other devices; TechRaptor staff have reached out to Capcom, and will update this article when we receive a response to our inquiries.

Resident Evil VII: Biohazard is currently slated for world wide release on January 24, 2017, for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One, and Microsoft Windows platforms, and on January 26, 2017, for Japan; an MSRP has been set for the game at $59.99

Stay tuned to TechRaptor for continuing coverage of Resident Evil VII: Biohazard, and the PlayStation VR headset.

Quick Take

If the ad is real, I think it's indicative of how titles released for VR headsets will be treated; timed exclusivity while the various bugs and kinks are ironed out, before being ported to other devices. This franchise is one that's had numerous cross-platform releases and ports throughout its twenty-year history, and I don't think Capcom will miss out on having VR headset support for the game on other devices - especially if the PlayStation VR support proves to be popular.

What are your thoughts on this ad? Do you think it means Capcom will be taking Resident Evil VII: Biohazard to other VR headsets? Let us know in the comment section below.
