Remedy Entertainment has acquired the publishing rights to their developed action horror game, Alan Wake.
In a press release, Remedy stated that they received a one-time payment of 2.5 million euros for royalty fees for the first half of 2019. "In relation to this, the publishing rights of Alan Wake games are reverted to Remedy," according to the listing.
Originally released in 2010, Alan Wake was originally published by Microsoft Game Studios, making it an exclusive title for the Xbox 360, before being ported to PC's in 2012. Alan Wake is a horror title with "the body of a cinematic action game", where players controlling the titular novelist Alan Wake must ward off mysterious beings known as The Taken - shadowy creatures hell-bent on killing Alan - with the help of a flashlight that leaves them vulnerable to conventional weapons as Alan investigates the disappearance of his wife.
Alan Wake was a modest success, and saw a spinoff title, Alan Wake's American Nightmare, release on the Xbox 360 and PC in 2012.
Remedy has not made any announcements regarding Alan Wake at this time, and thus far there are currently no plans to revive Alan Wake for multiple console releases. They have, however, made a tease to a multiplatform release in the future.
"The only thing we want to clarify, now that Remedy owns the publishing rights, is that we could bring Alan Wake to different platforms if we so choose," a Remedy spokesperson told website Eurogamer. "We have nothing to announce for now. We are fully focused on Control releasing on 27th August."
Quick Take
While Remedy has made no announcements for a new Alan Wake game, now that the publishing rights are back in their hands from Microsoft there is nothing really standing in their way for bringing the game to other consoles. Of course, anything is speculation at this point, whether Remedy is working on a sequel that they want to release on all current consoles, or whether they re-release the original game on Sony or Nintendo systems is anyone's guess.
Still, it is nice to see the developers regain full control over their IP. Alan Wake was a fun, if somewhat tongue-in-cheek horror game when it was released. Now we may be able to see more of it around with Remedy controlling it fully.
