After 15 years of service as a corporate executive (and nearly as many as a beloved Internet meme), it's been announced that Reggie Fils-Aime retires from Nintendo in the next few months. He is set to be replaced as President by Doug Bowser in April 2019 after his last day. (Yes, his surname really is Bowser—you can't make this stuff up.)

Reggie Fils-Aime began his career at Nintendo in 2003 as the Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing. He quickly rose to the positions of President and Chief Operating Officer in three short years and has remained in those positions for well over a decade. Mr. Fils-Aime is a familiar face to many a Nintendo fan, often appearing on stage at E3 or in front of the camera for the occasional Nintendo Direct presentation. Most recently, he announced the arrival of Joker from Persona 5 in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate.

Doug Bowser will be the new Nintendo President after Reggie Fils-Aime retires. Yes, his surname is really Bowser.

Mr. Fils-Aime will be replaced by Doug Bowser on April 15, 2019. Mr. Bowser first began his career at Nintendo in 2015 as the Vice President for sales. He previously worked at Electronic Arts since 2007.

"It has been my great fortune to work with and be mentored by Reggie for four years at Nintendo of America," Mr. Bowser said in a press release from Nintendo. "And rest assured, we will continue to build on his work to evolve and expand our brand, furthering Nintendo’s global mission of creating smiles. There are millions more of those to come."

As for Reggie, he had his own kind words to share with the world regarding his retirement:

"Nintendo owns a part of my heart forever. It’s a part that is filled with gratitude – for the incredibly talented people I’ve worked with, for the opportunity to represent such a wonderful brand, and most of all, to feel like a member of the world’s most positive and enduring gamer community. As I look forward to departing in both good health and good humor, this is not ‘game over’ for me, but instead ‘leveling up’ to more time with my wife, family and friends." -Nintendo President & COO Reggie Fils-Aime
When Reggie Fils-Aime retires, it will be the end of an era at Nintendo. He mentored his successor for several years, so here's hoping that Mr. Bowser can continue to uphold the magical legacy that Reggie is leaving behind.
