Remember all the commotion back in April when Microsoft uncovered the rumored E.T. Atari cartridges in New Mexico? Well word has gotten out that officials will be offering a limited amount available for sale to the general public, as well as providing some to various institutions such as museums in the area. Of the cartridges recovered, only 171 are the infamous E.T., other games have also been dug up. Old Atari games such as Missile Command and Asteroids are amongst the recovered games as well, but will not fetch the same price as E.T.
The landfill that has been the source of these Atari artifacts has since been filled back in with an estimated 700,000 cartridges still buried within. Collectors who miss out on this chance may have another opportunity in the future should the city ever choose to open up this vault to the past once again. Until then, we’ll keep an ear to the ground.
