One of the most popular British development companies of all time, Rare Ltd, will be holding their Creative Jam next week. For those not in the know, Game Jams are events which are held all over the world where game developers can get together and collaborate on entirely new ideas and projects free from the strain of projects they have been previously working on.
One of the most famous game jams is the Global Game Jam which takes place in January every year and has produced highly popular games such as Surgeon Simulator. However, they are not always open events, many companies such as Double Fine hold their own game jams every year. Double Fine’s Amnesia Fortnight has been held every year since 2007 and has produced popular games such as Costume Quest and Stacking.
Rare have been incredibly popular in their time creating some of the most popular N64 franchises of all time such as Donkey Kong Country, Banjo Kazooie, Star Fox and the infamous Conker’s Bad Fur Day. However, there was some controversy surrounding the company when it was bought out my Microsoft back in 2002. Rare immediately stopped working on their latest Banjo Kazooie title as they began working on projects with Microsoft. However, in an attempt to make more profit from the development company Microsoft soon had them working on the Kinect and an uninspired library of games, rather than their previous unique history.
At the time of the Microsoft buy out many key figures who build Rare left the company and we our now seeing the development of a Rare spiritual successor, Yooka-Laylee , made by many people who used to work for the company.
Rare Ltd shared on their Twitter that their Creative Jam would be held next week and I’m sure gamers are excited to see what the results will be.
