Raptor Picks 2014

2014 was a good year for the PlayStation Vita. It saw plenty of new games spanning a variety of different genres and even saw some new functionality being added like the improved support and connectivity between the PlayStation 4 and the PS Vita. One genre that the PS Vita has taken by storm is the JRPG with many different games coming to the platform. In the past if we ever say JRPGs were getting western releases they were for PlayStation home consoles, but now it seems the PS Vita is just as good a console to support.  The Raptors did their best to pick out what they thought were the most worthy of playing in 2014 on the PSVita. -- Andrew Stretch

Because of a three way tie for second here, we're not doing a runner up here, though at least one case ended up splitting the votes for them and giving another game the lead.

Freedom Wars

Freedom Wars

Freedom Wars is a JRPG set in a dystopian future where civilization has created factions and now fights one another. Each mission you are taken on requires you to fight against abductors, giant mechanized weapons, in order to rescue civilians that have been captured. How you fare during these missions allows you to earn points for your faction in an attempt to improve its standing on the global leader board.

Some key features that make this game so great is the four player ad-hoc or eight player wi-fi competitive mode as well as the option for players to select a city to represent from around the world and customize their character to make their character their own. -- Andrew Stretch

Currently Available on: Amazon (Physical and Digital ).

Disgaea 4: A Promise Revisited

Disgaea 4 - A Promise Revisited

Welcome back again to the world of Disgaea. This time you take up the mantle of a vampire named Valvatorez whose aim is to become the president of the netherworld. This game is a remake of Disgaea 4: A Promise Unforgotten which was originally made for the PlayStation 3, but A Promise Revisited has plenty of additional content.

On top of the regular game plentiful bonus content, more has been added such as new scenarios and back plot to characters. Some characters from previous Disgaea games also make an appearance in this version. This game boasts a fantastic art style with stunningly fluid animations and plenty of great details. -- Andrew Stretch

Currently Available on: Gamestop (Digital) and Amazon (physical - limited edition).

Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc

Danganropa

Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc is a text-based adventure game (with some other gameplay elements) that drops you into a school with 15 other students who are all told to kill each other to escape. Made by Spike Chunsoft - the same developers as 999 & Zero's Last Reward - Danganronpa is a must-play to anyone who is a fan of mysteries and/or the game genre. With solid characters, an involving story, nice art & great music, this is a must-have title on the PlayStation Vita. -- Tanis Pallagi

Currently Available on: Amazon (phyiscal) and Gamestop (Digital).

Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair

danganronpa 2

Danganronpa 2: Goodbye Despair is a direct sequel to the first game, thus making it impossible to recommend on its own. Many elements remain the same: most of the game is text-based, the trials are similar, and there are some re-used songs. Despite those elements, Goodbye Despair improves on its predecessor in numerous ways with a stronger cast, harder mysteries to solve, and one hell of an ending. If you liked Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc there is no reason not to play this one. -- Tanis Pallagi

Currently Available on: Amazon (Physical only).

Winner: Ratchet and Clank HD Trilogy

Ratchet and Clank Trilogy PSVita

The first three Ratchet and Clank games on the PlayStation 2 were the perfect mix of over the top gadgets, exploration, story and platforming. The Ratchet and Clank HD Trilogy for PSVita took those already fantastic games, made them look good enough for it to not ruin your memory of the original games, and most importantly put together all three games for your enjoyment on the go.

Playing this game was a fun experience the entire way through, even when replaying worlds over again to search for any extra bolts to work my way towards the R.H.Y.N.O. Each world in all of the games is set up so you can quite easily pull out your Vita when on the bus or just sitting around the house without having to devote hours at a time to clearing sections of the game. -- Andrew Stretch

Currently Available on: Amazon (Digital Only)

This year for the PS Vita we saw plenty of different games such as platformers, action, role playing games and strategy games. This has been the PS Vita’s second full year of release and the games collection has been growing like crazy this past year. With the introduction of the PlayStation TV, options to play PS Vita games have been wider than ever too. If the picks that we had for the best of 2014 for the PS Vita are a sign for anything then we can look forward to plenty of great classic re-releases as well as plenty of brand new games to the hardware. -- Andrew Stretch
