Super Smash Bros may still be king when it comes to fans salivating over what character may be announced next, but today Mortal Kombat X gets a chance to shine in the light (or should I say lightning!) with the upcoming return of Raiden, a series favorite character.

Mortal Kombat X Raiden Returning

Of course, this is no surprise. Raiden is a staple of the series and everyone knew he was coming back. What's exciting is to see how Netherrealm Studios may improve or change such a classic character in this violent series. Said violence is looking to be as brutal as ever, but what really stands out among the blood and bones is the impressive animations on the characters. In a new video (which you can check out above) we get to see some of the stellar animations that the team have given to Raiden, including a super impressive throw animation that is second-to-none (About 1:53 in the video.)

Whereas most fighting games have the character vaguely grab the general hitbox of the opponent fighter, we can expect to see fighters specifically grabbing arms, legs, etc. Speaking of opponents, the video also featured a new fighter to the series named Kotal Kahn who is alluded to be a sort of sun god much like Raiden's a thunder god. The sun god look is complete with an Aztec god design and several burning attacks, so it seems like a fitting match-up to put him up against another elementally-themed deity with a slightly different flavor.

The game is set to be released April 14, 2015 on Xbox One, PS4, and PC platforms.

Quick Take

It seems almost like a no-brainer to bing Raiden back to Mortal Kombat X. This game is being sold as a huge event in the ongoing (and slightly mental) canon of the MK series, so not-including one of the series' most recognizable characters would probably have done a lot to annoy long-time fans. Still, it's nice to have it confirmed, and the above video will certainly get you excited if you're a fan of smooth animations and violent take-downs.
