Quantum Break, the time-freezing shooter from Remedy, is waiting on Microsoft to deploy a Windows 10 update to fix crashing according to VG 24/7.

The issue was spelled out in a State of the Game post on Remedy's forums:

Added 27.4.2016: Microsoft has identified a Windows 10 memory management issue which may cause Quantum Break to crash on some GPUs. This crash is seen more frequently at higher game settings. Microsoft plans to fix this in a future Windows Update.

Remedy Head of PR Thomas Puha went on to explain that some of the issues in Quantum Break will simply take time to fix and that it's pointless to continually repeat "We are working on these issues."

Quantum Break is suffering from other issues on Windows 10 besides the memory management issue. A rounding error in their programming is causing the frame rate in the game to stutter. Another issue is that long play sessions can occasionally lead to video memory being fragmented; this fragmentation is very rare but severely slows down rendering performance in the instances it does happen. Remedy hopes to address both of these issues in a future patch.

The frame rate on the Windows 10 version of the game is currently locked. Changing this also relies on Microsoft to handle some things on their end. This issue should be fixed once Microsoft enables developers to disable VSync in the Universal Windows Platform environment.

Lastly, one of the stranger issues on Windows 10 is the lack of a proper "Quit Game" option on the title screen. This too will be fixed in a future game update. For now, players will have to either point their mouse to the top-right of the screen and click on the "X" or hit Alt+F4 on their keyboards to close out the program.

Quantum Break can be purchased for the Xbox One or Windows 10. TechRaptor reviewed Quantum Break here.

Quick Take

Quantum Break seemed to be a sort of flagship title for Windows 10 and the Xbox One yet it launched with a lot of issues. I feel that many of these issues come down to the insistence of publishers (Microsoft, in this case) to release a game at its deadline unless it's an absolute mess. I really wish that more game developers would adopt a "It's ready when it's ready" philosophy that certain companies espouse. Games will always have issues on launch no matter how much you test them but it would be nice to see launches of huge blockbuster titles like this go a little bit smoother.

What do you think of Quantum Break as a game? Do you think Microsoft is doing a good job of quickly responding to the problem of Quantum Break crashing on certain GPUs? Let us know in the comments below!
