One of the biggest internet companies in China, NetEase Inc., has acquired a minority stake in David Cage’s Quantic Dream S.A. via their gaming arm, NetEase Games. The intent is to “further the development and distribution of global online games”. However, the company will still remain under the control of Cage and co-CEO Guillaume de Fondaumière, it was announced today.

Quantic Dream focuses on storytelling games, with their most recent release being the divisive Detroit: Become Human. The studio has been around for 22 years, though it has worked directly with Sony for the past 12. It is aiming to be a global entertainment force within the games industry.

Ethan Wang, VP of NetEase, Inc., commented on the investment:

"With a strong focus on in-house development, we are constantly looking for partners that complement us in the development and creation of the next generation games. Quantic Dream's excellence in interactive storytelling and the valuable expertise it has built over the past two decades is exactly what we have been looking for. We are pleased to partner with Quantic Dream and we hope to create incredible game experiences for players all around the globe."
Additionally, David Cage made a statement, claiming NetEase will help the company to expand their creative goals and “develop the company to its fullest potential.” He goes on to say that NetEase understands their mission to harness all of the new hardware and evolutions we’ve come to expect from the gaming industry.

Furthermore, de Fondaumière shared his thoughts, stating that the collaboration will help Quantic Dream build their stance “as pioneers and innovators.”

This news comes along with the announcement that Quantic Dream will develop games for platforms outside of PlayStation, reports Variety. “Our objective is to be present on all platforms where there is an audience that can enjoy our experiences,” writes Fondaumière. “We will, of course, continue developing on PlayStation, a platform that we know very well after having worked with Sony for 12 years, but we will also be present on all other relevant platforms.”

NetEase develops some of the most popular PC and mobile games in China. With a focus on online gaming, the company also partners with groups such as Blizzard Entertainment and Minecraft developer Mojang.
