PLAYERUNKNOWN'S BATTLEGROUNDS

The popularity of PlayerUnknown's Battlegrounds (PUBG) is astronomical for any game, but considering PUBG only came out in March of this year and is a brand new IP. PUBG has been slowly creeping towards overtaking Dota 2's crown of the most concurrent players on Steam and today PUBG now holds the top spot of all time, with 1,349,413 players.

Dota 2 held the record before with 1,295,114 players at one time. Dota 2 and PUBG are the only two games to break the 1 million player threshold at one time on Steam, with Counter-Strike: Global Offensive bringing up third with 854,801 and fourth place goes to Fallout 4, well behind at 472,962. This is also the first time that Steam itself has risen over 15 million concurrent players on the platform.

PUBG has seen a steady rise in sales, particularly recently, as it reached 10 million copies sold less than two weeks ago. According to Steam Spy, PUBG had 8,265,335 owners on Steam as of August 24th and as of September 14th had 11,287,600 ± 97,487. That's over 3 million in sales in less than a month. So, we can likely expect the concurrent user count to rise even further in the future.

One thing interesting to note is that this 1.3 million concurrent player count matches up near identically to the recently released Destiny 2, Bungie's massive AAA title. In a blog post from the 14th, Bungie noted they just hit the 1.3 million concurrent player mark. Right now PUBG is only available on PC, with the Xbox One version launching sometime this year, while Destiny 2 is currently available on both PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, with the PC version launching next month. It's also worth noting that Destiny 2 had only been out for a little over a week at the time of the blog post, so the numbers may still climb.

Have you given PUBG a try yet? What do you think of the game? Do you think the sales pace will keep up? Let us know in the comments below!
