Nintendo 2DS preview

In a bid to encourage gamers to take to the portable Nintendo gaming experience, the company have now dropped the recommended retail price of their cheaper portable console from $129.99 to just $99.99 as of August 30th. It will still contain a copy of Mario Kart 7 pre-installed.

The Nintendo 2DS is a cheaper version of Nintendo's portable 3DS console and has fewer features than the regular model. Asides from having the 3D function removed, the Nintendo 2DS console is larger as the clamshell design has been replaced with a general handheld design.  It also does not include the amiibo reader featured on the new Nintendo 3DS and cannot play games designed specifically for that console such as the new Xenoblade. The screen is also significantly smaller compared to the New 3DS LL with 3.53" to the new models 4.88".

Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America's Executive Vice President of Sales and Marketing had this to say on the new pricing:

“At a suggested retail price of $99.99, Nintendo 2DS is an even more attractive introductory option for first-time gamers,” “The new lower-priced hardware combined with the strong lineup of new games launching this year and arguably the best library of games in this generation makes it a great time to be a Nintendo fan.”

Nintendo have promoted this reduced price console as an alternative to its more expensive New 3DS LL models not only through pricing but also through the consoles unique durability, which makes it preferable for parents purchasing for younger players.

Nintendo ended their press release by reminding us of the titles which are ready for release this year compatible with the 2DS such as Animal Crossing: Happy Home DesignerChibi-Robo! Zip Lash, Pokémon Super Mystery DungeonThe Legend of Zelda: Tri Force Heroes and YO-KAI WATCH.

Quick Take

I own the 3DS, New 3DS LL and the 2DS and the 2DS without the clamshell design is my favorite. Mine was purchased for this price last year without a game included, so I think this is a good offer.

[UPDATE] Refurbished consoles have now also dropped to $60.
