Released early this morning via their YouTube Nintendo has announced that Pokken Tournament, the previous Japan only arcade title, will be getting its world wide release in the Spring of 2016 for WiiU. Pokken Tournament was originally teased last year with a hint of Blaziken and Machamp fighting one another before it was unveiled as Pokken Tournament, a mix of Pokemon and Tekken, that would be hitting Japanese Arcades.

Pokken Tournament will play as a 3D fighter where the fighters are in a large round arena set in different locations such as the Regi Ruins or Chrom Town in the new region of Ferrum. You will be able to move around and jump as you like and when you’re close to your opponent there a light and heavy attacks that vary based on where the D-pad is pointed. For an added touch there are also supports to summon as well as a resonance gauge that when you fill allows you to inflict extra damage and burst attacks, and for some fighters will mega evolve them.

From this trailer we can see that the cast of fighters will be the same as in the arcade version and will include Charizard, Pikachu, Machamp, Gengar, Suicune, Blaziken, Gardevoir, Lucario and Weavile. This trailer also gives us a first look at Pikachu Libre, a Pikachu wearing the same outfit that Cosplay Pikachu would wear to boost toughness in Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire. No word yet if Pikachu Libre will have a different moveset as Pikachu or if it will have a different moveset.

As well as the playable fighters there will also be support characters that are two pokemon that you decide while selecting characters and then you can only use one in battle. These characters can be summoned in after their charge time to throw your opponent off guard. At the moment there are 8 support characters in the arcade version, of them we saw some like Snivy and Emolga but it’s safe to assume that all support characters will be present.

Are you looking forward to Pokken Tournament coming to WiiU? Which character are you most excited to see on the roster? Are there any characters that you would want added?

I have been playing all kinds of games for as long as I can remember with a particular interest in action adventure and platforming titles. While I am primarily an Xbox gamer I also spend a fair bit of time on the PS4 and on my PC in VR.
