Almost ten years after ceasing production, the first Sony console is making a return of sorts as the PlayStation Classic according to a post on the PlayStation Blog.

Sony's very first console was the PlayStation, a somewhat unassuming grey brick that sported a blazing fast 33.8 MHz processor and a hefty 2 MB of RAM. (Hey, it was pretty good for its time.) It sold over 100 million units in just under a decade and continued to perform strongly even after the release of its successor system the PlayStation 2 until its production was finally shut down in the mid-2000s. Now it's set to make a return (in a fashion) with the announcement of the PlayStation Classic. Take a look at its Introduction trailer:

A console needs games to go with it and the PlayStation Classic will include 20 titles built-in to the system. Only five have been announced so far:

  • Final Fantasy VII
  • Jumping Flash
  • Ridge Racer Type 4
  • Tekken 3
  • Wild Arms
The other fifteen games will be revealed in the coming weeks and months. It's not yet known if we'll see regional differences with the game libraries as we did with other similar devices like the SNES Classic.

As for the hardware, the box will contain the miniature console itself, two full-size controllers, an HDMI cable, and a USB cable for power. Regrettably, the packaging won't include a power plug adapter which is required for the device to function. You'll need to purchase an AC adapter that supports 5 V, 1.0 A USB (Type A) output separately, or just use one of the many you might have lying around from mobile phones.

You can see a whole bunch more neat photos at the official site for the PlayStation Classic. If you just can't wait to get your hands on this newest miniature throwback, you won't have to wait long. It will be available for purchase at select retailers on the historic date of December 3, 2018 - the same day that the OG console first launched in Japan. You'll be able to pick it up on that date for the price $99.99, $CAD 129.99, or €99.99 and pre-orders should be opening up soon at select retailers.

What do you think of Sony's PlayStation Classic? Do you think the console will perform as well as other miniature throwback consoles? What games do you hope to see come included? Let us know in the comments below!
